There and back again. Then...There and back again.

We stayed up late during the summer. Sterling would go to bed between 11:30-12. One night in particular, he convinced me to drive us both to the convenience store. Put on a hat, slippers, more appropriate clothing...grab my keys and wallet and we walked out to the car. It's a one minute drive to the store at best. Half-way there, he grabs my arm and tells me to turn back as he needs to use the restroom.
"I'm sorry dad, I gotta go now."
"No big deal", I told him. I turned the car around, drove to the house and parked. Sterling ran into the unlocked house.
I kept the engine running as he would be back in no-time.
Two minutes pass...nothing.
Five minutes pass...nothing.
I can see my neighbor looking out his front window at me as the engine is running. I rolled down the window and gave him a wave.
Ten minutes have now passed.
I backed the car out and turned it around so the nose of the car was facing the way out of the driveway.
Fifteen minutes and nothing.
At this point I was fuming. It took him 15 minutes of non stop badgering to get me to commit to going to the store. As I was getting ready to go, he was sitting in a chair watching tv. Once I was ready I had to bark at him to get his stuff together.
Out of the car I jumped. Engine still running and fists clinched, I angrily walked to the front door. Mumbling under my breath all the while.
I thrust the door open and startled my seated son.
"Oh...dad you scared me!"
Out of my mouth comes my most popular phrase, when dealing with my son.
"What the hell are you doing?"
"Watching tv. What did you bring me?"
"HUH...Nothing...I've been waiting for you. What did you do? Why didn't you come back outside. You said you wanted to go to the store. I don't know what you want."
"I went poop. I thought you left so I started watching tv."
I explained to him I had been waiting for 15 minutes for him to return. AS ANYBODY ELSE WOULD HAVE DONE UNLESS ANOTHER PLAN WAS DISCUSSED. He thought it quite comical that I waited.
"Can we still go, dad?"
Off we went.
