I don't understand

The boy doesn't seem to care if his stuff isn't in his own possession.  He left his computer at a friends house.  The friend is on vacation in Georgia.  When I asked how long, he didn't know.  It's been two weeks so far.  When I asked if the mom went, he replied "I don't know."  I don't get it.
