Two things happened last night.
First...he was wearing two bracelets. Second...I discovered he has another girlfriend.
While neither one of these statements is eye popping, they did entertain me.
We were sitting on the couch, watching tv. Something caught my eye. Sterling had on two stretchy bracelets. Upon further inspection, one of them read "I love boobies". I quickly confiscated them.
I felt they were a little over the top for a twelve year old. Yes...I know all 12 year olds crave attention. Yes, I know he is a boy. Yes, I know spring fever is in full effect. I also know those bracelets are over the top. He tried to counter my confiscating the bracelets by letting me know he had been wearing them for three days.
Nice try, boy. The three days you had been wearing them, you were at your mothers'.
I think the reason I even noticed the bracelets is because he was texting compulsively. When I glanced at his phone it read "Kaylene".
OH...IT'S ON!
We went round and round.
It started with my teasing him about Kaylene. Then the word "girlfriend" was tossed out. His cheeks started out pink...then jumped to lobster red at mere mention of the "g" word. He stood up and started prancing around.
"You're just mad that nobody is texting YOU, dad", he started.
The kid is quick...but I saw through his little ploy. Don't try changing the subject on me! What are you...a woman. You have good changing of subject skills, young grasshopper.
"You're just mad YOU don't have a girlfriend." He said.
Nice try again. You can try to derail my teasing...but I've been here before...YOU WILL NOT DEFLECT MY ATTACK.
After a half hour the teasing subsided. His cheeks returned to their normal color. Sterling announced that he "hated" me a few times. The bracelets stayed in my pocket and the "click click click" of Sterling texting started up again.
I have since told my father that Sterling has a girlfriend and we're currently in Arizona visiting him. The teasing and ribbing will continue all vacation long.
It does my heart good to embarrass the boy.
